THE RIGHT OF PUBLIC ACCESS

Sweden’s right to roam, known as “Allemansrätten” or the right of public access is famous amonst nature lovers! Allemansrätten means you can bicycle, hike and camp in the Swedish nature. However, you may not pass through private gardens, land surrounding a house, or cultivated fields. You can pick mushrooms, berries and flowers as long as these are not protected species. Take your rubbish home with you, only light fires in places designated for the purpose and don’t chop down trees or break off branches for firewood. However, picking up dead wood from the ground to make a fire is allowed. Make sure you’re up to date on any fire bans before you light a fire.  If you want to fish in lakes or rivers, you will need a fishing permit. Small groups (maximum 3 tents) can camp for one or two nights without the landowner’s permission as long as you do not disturb the people or animals that live there.

The right to roam is restricted in nature reserves and other protected areas. The general rule for visitors is: “don’t disturb, don’t destroy”. When exercising the right of public access, consider being a hero by contributing to nature and leaving it better than you found it.
