Are you looking for a nature experience with a true sense of wilderness? Then Lunnamossen is the reserve for you. Lunnamossen is an area characterised by silence, tranquillity, and untouched nature. It can be challenging to cross the bog itself, but you can walk along its edges and experience its natural beauty.
Lunnamossen consists mostly of open mire, but within the wetland there are also patches of higher ground, known as myrholmar (bog islands). These islands are home to natural-like pine forest and mixed coniferous forest. The forest here has been undisturbed for a long time, and many ancient pines rise towards the sky. In 2013, the age of an old pine on the northeastern edge of the bog was determined. The tree was estimated to be over 400 years old, meaning it began growing in the late 1500s. This is currently the oldest known pine in Halland County.
A Haven for Many Interesting Plants
Among the plants growing in the reserve are bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum), lesser tufted sedge (Carex diandra), hare’s-tail cottongrass (Eriophorum vaginatum), cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos), and sweet gale (Myrica gale). There is also a great variety of mosses, such as Sphagnum fuscum (sooty sphagnum), Sphagnum capillifolium (horned sphagnum), Sphagnum cuspidatum (floating sphagnum), Sphagnum magellanicum (magellanic bogmoss), and Sphagnum rubellum (ruby sphagnum). The birdlife is rich here, with species such as breeding western capercaillie, black grouse, black woodpecker, and resting common cranes.
Traces of the Past
A map of the area was made in 1816. At that time, Lunnamossen was called “Lönsmåssen,” where “lön” probably derives from the Old Swedish löna, meaning to conceal or hide. “To lunna” was an old expression meaning “to haul logs or firewood in the forest/on the outlands.” The bog’s name may be connected to this activity. Within the boundaries of the nature reserve, there are two areas of ancient remains: the croft remains of Hästhult and Lilla Hästhult. These sites are marked with information posts by the local heritage association.
