Hägnen is a rocky headland in Lake Södra Färgen near Femsjö. Here you’ll find ancient beech forest as well as mixed woodland with pine, birch, beech, and oak. For those interested in mycology—the study of fungi—the reserve is an especially exciting place to visit. Since the time of the mycologist Fries, the area has been known as a prime location for fungi.
The Femsjö region is well known among many who are passionate about mycology. This is where Elias Fries, the father of modern mycology, was active in the early 1800s. In Fries’ notes, one can find many observations about the local fungal flora. In the manuscript “Fungal Sites near Femsjö,” for example, it is stated that one of the richest locations for fungi is Hägnen—a rocky headland in Lake Södra Färgen where today ancient beech forest and mixed woodland with pine, birch, beech, and oak grow.
